Welcome! 欢迎!Benvenuta! Wilkommen! Bienvenue!
There is joy in learning, in diversity, and in the growth that comes from exposure to both.
In an ever-changing, ever-globalising world, my experiences living, studying, teaching, and singing abroad have given me a unique perspective on how music can foster curiosity and create connection. I proudly strive to instil these tenets in my teaching and in my students.
Whether students go on to sing in the world's most prestigious institutions and theatres, or to raise their voices in their own communities, I trust that this curiosity, connection, and empathy for others, and themselves, will lead them to enriching lives in all walks of life.
About Me
For more than 25 years, I have had two parallel careers as a singer and a teacher. I know that being a singer makes me a better teacher, and being a teacher makes me a better singer.
My approach to teaching is holisitic: a take a student-centered approach to learning, meeting each singer where they are and guiding them to where they would like to go. My diverse background as a pianist, violist, dancer, actor, writer, and polyglot allow me to see each singer as a whole performer.
In recent years, singers studying with me have been admitted into voice programmes in the Shanghai Conservatory and Royal College of Music, have won art song competitions at the national level in China and internationally in Korea. I have also successfully guided students to distinction in both classical voice and musical theatre ABRSM and Trinity music exams.
Since 2011, I have been a specialist in Chinese art song and singing in Mandarin as both a performer and educator. It has led me to perform extensively in China and abroad in some of the world's most celebrated halls. My book, Singing in Mandarin, published in 2020, is the first text to teach non-native speakers how to sing in Mandarin. That material has also formed the basis for my PhD research in vocal pedagogy at the Royal College of Music in London. As a result, I have led workshops and masterclasses for singers and institutions all over the world interested in learning about this beautiful repertoire and exploring song beyond the Euro-centric borders. It has also led me to work extensively with native-speaking Chinese singers learning to sing in standard operatic languages. I am proud that my work as a performer and teacher sits at the intersection of all of these practices, styles, cultures, and languages, helping others to find their musical home in the world.
I am passionate about working with serious singers of all ages and levels. I have experience and success working with singers with ADHD, autism, vocal dysfuntion, and blindness. Due to my performing and teaching travel, most students work with me in a hybrid format, working both in-person (UK (London), USA (Boston, New York and Atlanta), Germany (Berlin and Hamburg), China (Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing), and online.
